Encryption
Do you want to make very sure that no one else can read or access information on your PC? Encrypt it!
Encryption software is free – it was developed by the U.S. Government - and it is fairly easy to use.
Encrypted data is almost impossible to hack – even the FBI and National Security agencies have a hard time breaking encrypted data.
Be warned, if you forget or loose your encryption password key, YOU will not be able to access your data either!!! So be sure to record your password in multiple locations so you can find it when you need it.
Google: encryption software and you’ll find lots of entries.
Truecrypt is a popular option – it is simple to use, passwords can be changed easily, their documentation is good, and there are even instructions for using Trucrypt posted on YouTube.com !
Once your data is encrypted, if your PC is lost or stolen, no one else can view your files… if they don’t have your password encryption key.
Key Logger Warning!!! Be warned: if a key logger has been installed on your PC, your passwords will be compromised with the rest of your data. Key loggers are the biggest threat to secure data in all environments. Any PC that does not enjoy 100% physical security (and which ones do) can be easily compromised with a key logger. So be careful and understand the benefits and limitations of encryption.
